Futures margin is not borrowed money and is not a down payment in the stock-broker sense — it is a good-faith deposit that proves you can cover daily losses on a contract you do not yet own outright. When you trade one S&P 500 E-mini contract worth over $200,000 of notional exposure, you post perhaps $12,000 to hold it, and the difference — often 15 to 20 times — is leverage that magnifies every point of the index. Effective leverage is that notional divided by the total initial margin posted; 210,000 over a 12,000 posting is 17.5 times. This is the multiplier that turns a 1% market move into a 17.5% change in your margin equity, which is why the leverage figure, not the margin amount, is the number to respect. Futures trade nearly overnight, so weekend and overnight gaps can move more in one session than the cushion allows. A 17-times-levered position can lose half its margin equity in a single 3% gap. Each futures contract has a fixed multiplier, tick size, and point value, and margin requirements are exchange-set and can change with volatility. Before entering, confirm the current margin from your broker and the point value for your contract — using an outdated quote is how a 'safe' position becomes over-levered overnight. Run the account balance and margin per contract through the tool and check the margin-as-%-of-account figure. If it lands above 30%, you have little cushion for any adverse run. Use the points-to-margin-call output to answer the question 'how far can this move against me before I must add funds?' If the answer is smaller than the contract's average daily range, you are over-levered for that instrument. Reduce contracts or pick a less volatile product until the adverse-move cushion comfortably exceeds the typical daily swing.
Many brokers reduce margin for day trading but charge overnight margins at settlement. If you hold into the evening, make sure the account can cover the higher overnight requirement, not just the intraday one.
